Hipp hipp hurra!
Today is Norway's "independence day", except we call it national day. We celebrate the day when Norway, back in 1814 got its own constitution (and a very liberal and forwardthinking one it was back then!). And what's so special about Norway's national day, is that it's mainly a day for the children. No military parades or anything, but parades with all the schools near by and marching bands. The marching bands are by the way called "korps" in Norwegian, which can lead to some misunderstandings when not-so-clever-with-english Norwegians try to explain the concepts of May 17th. "Today there are lots of corpses in the streets." Unfortunately, I'm not making this up *lol*
So, Love and I woke up by cannon salutes around 8. Got up, couldn't find anything to wear with it being a little chillier today than expected (seriously, I didn't find anything! I ended up with jeans, a smart jacket and adding more accessories than usual, to make it look festive. Still not pleased though). Then went to town to watch the parade. Whoa... long! I come from a small place where our May 17th parade consisted (and still does) of one school and one marching band. Here there's... dunno, many! It was one hour long. One hour of people passing by. Now that's a lot! It's the first time I've seen the parade here in this town, because... last year we were on our way home from Amsterdam at this time, and the year before we overslept.. haha!
But, caught it this year and I'm glad we did. It's nothing fancy, really, just a lot of kids who yell "hurra!", but it belongs to any proper May 17th celebration.
Later on we'll go over to some friends for dinner and later tonight we'll dress up as Vægtere (guardians) and front the torch parade. I just hope it doesn't start raining... that would be a bummer.
