Now I have an excuse...

... for not liking things I've been glared at for saying I dislike.
Grapefruit. Olives. Tonic water. Brussel sprouts. Red wine.
Here's a scientific explanation.
I've known this since junior high, from when we had genetics experiments and we had to taste a piece of paper. To me it tasted real bitter, seriously icky, while my friend Sunny sat there with the paper sticking out of her mouth, looking at me funny.
Here's another "supertaster's" story.

Why this? Well, I'm kinda fascinated. Love is doing an "adaware" thingy for the body which you have to take with grapefruit juice, and it doesn't bother him at all. I tried it and.. bleurgh!
It tastes seriously, absolutely vile and words can't really describe it. But that's what's so fascinating. How come most people don't notice this at all? I mean, it's obviously there, the stuff that makes it taste bad I mean.
More about it here.

"To identify supertasters, researchers rely on a chemical called PROP, used to treat some thyroid conditions, applied to small strips of paper that tasters put in their mouths. Nontasters, who also account for about a third of the US population, will taste nothing, and medium tasters, another third, will find the taste moderately bitter. But to a supertaster, the taste is overpoweringly bitter: Some researchers believe supertasters experience flavors with three times the intensity of others." Taken from this article.

But I'm not *that* bad. I enjoy broccoli and white wine if it's not dry. I also loooove dark chocolate, but that's something I've learned to love. I am picky about black coffee though, it can't have a very burnt or acid taste. And black or green teas without sugar? Forget it. Herbal and fruit teas on the other hand. Nummy!
