Holy cow, Batman!
Love and I visited his parents at their cottage this weekend. Very winter wonderland-y, in the middle of the woods, small cottage, fireplace lit, snow coming down and so on. Very christmassy and not the worst place to be revising for my exam tomorrow.
Getting home on the other hand... Whoa nelly! OK, straight facts first. Usually we make that drive in about an hour (1.10 to be exact). Today it took two hours. Why? Well, snow is all fluffy and stuff, but it's also what hell is made of!
Unfortunately we didn't have a shitload of reindeer to pull our sleigh (read: Hyacinth, the Poshmobile), so it was one heeeell of a ride. As in gut-wrenching, heart-pounding, peeing in your pants, scared for your life ride.
Hyacinth has decent tyres, but against a frikkin blizzard, no tyres will be good enough. The only thing you can do, is slow down and keep going straight forward. If you have to make a turn, well, poo for you. And pray you don't have to hit the brakes at any point, because that will get you sliding all over the road.
Even on the high way we needed to keep it slow. At some points we were driving about 40 kmH, compared to the actual 100 kmH speed limit (yes, there is one on our high ways). One stretch (still high way) was particularly bad. Here the traffic slowed down completely and snailed past FIVE cars that had slid/skidded of the road/crashed. FIVE cars at the same time. Whoa!
And there was another car only a few meters down the road, competely in the ditch. No idea which direction it came from, it would have done some serious spins either way.
Oh goodness... I'm so glad I'm back home in one piece. And happy Hyacinth is still in one piece also. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy. Of course, we 'wegies all have winter tyres and are somewhat trained at skidding/spinning/sliding during the winter, and I also know that Germany for instance breaks down over a thin layer of snow... But this was bad. Really bad. Ugh... I want my summer again!
PS: wish me luck with my exam tomorrow. If I get there, that is *lol* Ruddy snow!
