Movies, movies, movies - reviewed.
We've had somewhat of a movie extravaganza here this week. I haven't seen all of the movies I picked up yet, but I thought I'd tell you what I thought of the ones I've seen.
"Napoleon Dynamite"- Oh my... I'm not sure I got the point of it. It's a very quiet movie, slow progress and no big drama. But it had some funny points, and growing up in the 80s /90s there was plenty of recognizable stuff. But the über-geekyness of Napoleon got on my nerves.
"If these walls could talk 2" - The concept is three stories, one set in 1961, one in 1972 and one in 2000. The first one was about abortions (very good BTW), this one is about lesbians. But it's too stereotypical to say that, it's more stories of love than anything else. The first one is heart-breaking. An old woman is "widowed" and left with no rights when the love of her life dies.
The movie is worth seeing just for this story. I bawled like a baby and am still a bit upset over it.
"Kinsey" - I loved this! Though the conversations around that family's dinner table was a bit odd.
"The wedding date" - As a romantic comedy this wasn't that bad. I've seen worse. Debra Messing is adorable. I'm not much of a "Will & Grace" fan, but I loved her in this movie.
But it's a chick flick, so... yeah. For those tea and blanket moments.
"Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" - I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I've heard a lot about it, both negative and positive, but for me it had kept the absurdity the books have. Love laughed his a** off at the depressed Marvin, but to me it was a bit disturbing that it was Alan Rickman who did the voice of him. It was like "who the heck trapped Snape in that robot?".
"Dickie Roberts- Former child star" - David Spade. You know what you get. But it was funny enough. Devil rabbit, devil rabbit!
"Sin City" - Talk of hard boiled. Sheesh... Extremely masculine in the sense of big guns, shiny wheels and babes by the dozen. I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I don't like violent movies at all, I just can't seem to look at it as a "kill, it's a human being being slaughtered.
But it was visually beautiful, and I loved the way the story was told. Being handed everything on a silver platter is uninteresting, so movies like this is refreshing.
"The manchurian candidate" - Bah... They didn't quite get the thriller-part right here. When the 2 hour thriller first starts being thrilling after 1 hour and 20 minutes, something's wrong. Kill your darlings, cut away the dead meat, don't bore me. Ugh...
