Lifesaving bacon

Our stove has timely decided that it's time to retire. The top still works, but the oven is toast. At the moment we haven't got the funds to replace it (although browsing the paper and Norwegian equivalent to craigslist regularly to see if a cheap, usable one pops up), so all our meals are either fried or cooked.
Yesterday we made burgers (chicken, slightly healthier than fatty beef), and while I was in the shower, Love was frying bacon (chicken burger also slightly less tasty than beef, therefore requiring some "additives" in the shape of bacon). Last time he did so (last week, stove's been toast for two weeks now, so we've seen certain dishes repeat themselves the last couple of weeks), the bacon ended up being just... soft and rubber-like. So this time I told him to fry it crispy. He joked about flambé-ing it, and I said "no, just crispy please". What I didn't tell him was that it's a very bad idea to use too much heat and burn it completely, which of course I should have. Because naturally, that's what he did, and filling the entire apartment with smoke at the same time.

Which was actually a good thing. Because neither of our two fire/smoke alarms went off. Turns out they were both dead as doornails! Oh crap... That could potentially have been catastrophic if for instance our crappy stove decided to throw a BBQ party of its own.
So although the burgers were awful yesterday ("burnt" is a nasty additive indeed), they had their purpose.
The morale of this story? Check your alarms, people. Today! Right now, in fact!
If it needs a new battery, change it, if it still doesn't work with a new battery, change it! That's an order.
