The Tom Lehrer choice

Tom Lehrer does not give interviews anymore, unless he has, as he says, "something to sell". But he was in no doubt about the 2008 presidential election in the United States. Needless to say, Lehrer supported the former senator Barack Obama, who is now the 44th president of the United States.

A quote from The Washington Post

So okay, let's quote from The Washington Post and journalist Gene Weingarten, who early in 2008 contacted Tom Lehrer:

"Using an intermediary, I located Lehrer yesterday at one of his two homes (with characteristic contrariness, it seems that he winters in the Northeast and summers in the Southwest), but I was under a difficult stricture. Lehrer does no press interviews, and would not tolerate one, even in connection with this tribute. So I can't technically tell you what he said."

"(But) I am authorized to repeat one (more) thing about this non-interview, and it is quite appropriate for this very day. I asked Lehrer if there was anything he'd like to add, in this chat, about the current president. After a bit of pause he said, "Just tell the people that I am voting for Obama."

The Sydney Morning Herald

Let us have some more politics. It is tempting to quote from an interview in The Sydney Morning Herald in 2003, written during the years of the American Bush Dynasty II. This is Tom Lehrer in his own words:

"I'm not tempted to write a song about George W.Bush. I couldn't figure out what sort of song I would write. That's the problem: I don't want to satirise George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporise them."
