The Event Exchange Project download page

Soon after the release of Europa Universalis II a group of enthusiasts started the "Event Exchange Project". The purpose of the EEP is to provide players with additional historic events. It also provides what-if events for countries usually doomed to obliteration, like the Byzantine Empire.

The EEP has created a large set of new events, modified some existing events, and added or modified leaders, monarchs, AI files and scenario setup.

Dislaimer: The EEP is not supported in any way by Paradox. Moreover, the EEP and its creators bear no responsibility for any potential problems you might experience while using the EEP.

Update all the files prior to installation, so you can always can change back.

Installation/Getting Started

  1. If you have a previous EEP version installed, uninstall it by running uninst000.exe.
  2. Remove the EEP folder by moving it into the trash can.
  3. Make sure that your EU2 is version 1.07. It runs with the 1.07 betas as well, but it was not designed nor balanced for it. Please report any problems.
  4. Start the EEP_setup_142a.exe.

The setup will prompt you to choose the directory, in which your EU2 is installed, i.e. the directory where your Eu2.exe file resides. This is important, as otherwise your game wouldn't work. The default directory for North America is C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis 2 and the default directory for Europe is C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2.

EEP v. 1.41 is updated to run with the changes done to moddir in patch 1.06 of Europa Universalis 2, as well as to take advantage of some extra event triggers/commands introduced in the latest patch (1.07). As a result, any attempt to use it with EU2 versions lower than 1.07 will undoubtedly cause errors.

EEP v1.41 will be installed in EEP subdirectory of your main Europa Universalis 2 folder. EEP is run using the moddir, therefore no original Paradox files will be overwritten. You can still enjoy playing an original Grand Campaign from Paradox, or EEP enhanced Grand Campaign.

If for some reason you don’t like your EEP experience, it’s easy to uninstall by running uninst000.exe file, which should be located in your main Europa Universalis 2 folder.

To start the game using EEP, you must start the game from the yellow EEP icon on your desktop, not from the black EU2 icon. You ***MUST*** use the yellow icon on your desktop or you will not be able to use the EEP files.

The shortcut should contain (WIN2000, European version):
Target:
"D:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2\eu2.exe" D:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2\EEP
Start in:
"D:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Europa Universalis 2"

Options menu

After you choose the 1419 scenario, go to the options menu (where you would adjust game speed, difficulty level, etc.). Keep in mind that the AI files used by both the official Grand Campaign and the EEP scenarios make for best historical outcome on aggressiveness setting of coward or weakling.

For playing with the fantasy events included, chose it in the options menu after you have chosen scenario. You still can play either a historic or fantasy game. After the regular choices, there is an option to enable the fantasy events. If you select ON, the fantasy events will be loaded, & if you select OFF, the regular scenario will be loaded. The default setting is OFF, so if you do nothing, the regular scenario will be loaded.

Also new is the ability to start the 1419 scenario with Wales independent.
To do so, turn the independent Wales option ON in the options menu (it is the choice directly under the option to enable the fantasy events). Again, the default setting is OFF, so if you do nothing, Wales will not be independent in the 1419 scenario. Also note that if you set the independent Wales option to ON, you will also receive the fantasy Welsh leaders & monarchs, but not the fantasy Welsh events. To play as Wales with the fantasy Welsh events, you must also turn the fantasy events ON.

New for 1.4.2 is the possibility to use events modified for using with the removecot command introduced in the beta patches released after 1.07. With this command all the CoT:s will not be static, but close and appear in new places as the trade patterns changed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the EEP?
A: The Event Exchange Project is a way for Europa Universalis 2 players to communicate and post their ideas for new historical/what if events, monarchs, leaders and countries as well as scenario and other modifications, to make the game more historically accurate

Q: What scenarios will the Event Exchange Project handle?
A: Originally our scope was limited to modifying the Grand Campaign (1419), however as of release 1.3, we have expanded our work to include a 1520 start, inspired by a similar IGC scenario for EU1. The GC is still our primary concern with changes in the 1520 as secondary and so the 1419 start is most ‘complete’ as of this writing.

Q: Is EEP version 1.X.X compatible with Paradox patch 1.0X?
A: Check the release notes of the various EEP versions for compatibility with official EU2 releases by Paradox.

Q: Is the EEP compatible with the beta patches?
A: The intent of the EEP is to support official patch releases by Paradox; with beta patches being unsupported. The EEP can be used with beta patches, but no guarantee is given on how such games will progress. That being said, some text changes have been made to support text changes in the betas.

Q: Will installing the EEP make it so that I can’t play the regular(vanilla) GC?
A: No, as of 1.06, the EEP is in the moddir, so none of your original files will be modified. You can still run the vanilla GC through the black icon at any time, though we can’t really see why you would want to.

Q: Does the EEP work for MP? Whenever our host attempts to select a scenario, it crashes to the desktop. Help?
A: Because of a flaw in the way the moddir works (which keeps your original files from being touched), you will need to copy all of the .eug files from the EEP\scenarios folder into the standard scenarios folder. Unfortunately, the same thing must be done for any save files, so it’s not just a one click thing when using the EEP for multiplayer. Don’t let this discourage you of course.

Q: How come the EEP isn’t only about adding and modifying events?
A: As the creators of this project came to realize, modifying only events, limited the amount of historical accuracy they could induce. Additionally, we realized that not all of Paradox’s setups were historically accurate, and so it would have been nonsensical to ignore those inaccuracies while trying to make the game more accurate through events. Thus, the scope of the EEP has come to encompass almost everything including scenario setup, cultures and new countries, in order to create a more historically accurate and balanced game.

Q: Are there any new events/leaders/monarchs/etc. for country X?
A: Look in your EEP folder and then click into the db folder. You should see three folders: Events, leaders, and monarchs. Inside these folders are exactly what their label states. Opening anyone of them shows the files that Paradox made and we edited, or files that we created ourselves. If you don’t see any files for the country you are interested about, its possible that they haven’t received any modifications. If you do find a file, if you look inside you can see just what that nation has to offer.

Q: Just why do those Mamelukes have Georgian culture?
A: Mamelukes were slaves of Turkish and Circassian origin. The closest culture to Circassian is Georgian. Turkish is undesirable since it sets the Mams to attempts to conquer Anatolia, which they never tried to do. In short, its about balance, baby.

Q: I have a question that you didn’t answer. What should I do?
A: Feel free to post in our forum which is a subforum through the Scenarios & Modifications forum hosted by Paradox. But then, you probably already knew about that, didn’t you?

New in 1.4.1: Options and removed COT configurator:

For playing with the fantasy options, chose it in the options menu after you have chosen scenario. You still can play either a historic or fantasy game.

After you choose the 1419 scenario, go to the options menu (where you would adjust game speed, difficulty level, etc.). After the regular choices, there is an option to enable the fantasy set up. If you select ON, the fantasy events will be loaded, & if you select OFF, the regular scenario will be loaded. The default setting is OFF, so if you do nothing, the regular scenario will be loaded.

Also new to v1.4.1 is the ability to start the 1419 scenario with Wales independent.
To do so, turn the independent Wales option ON in the options menu (it is the choice directly under the option to enable the fantasy set up). Again, the default setting is OFF, so if you do nothing, Wales will not be independent in the 1419 scenario. Also note that if you set the independent Wales option to ON, you will also receive the fantasy Welsh leaders & monarchs, but not the fantasy Welsh events. To play as Wales with the fantasy Welsh events, you must also turn the fantasy setup ON.

New in 1.3.: EEP 1520 Scenario:

In addition to a modified Grand Campaign (1419), EEP v.1.30 introduced a new scenario, starting in 1520. To start the 1520 game choose the “1520 - The age of reformation” option from the list of scenarios available. You must start the game from the yellow EEP icon on your desktop to be able to play it. Please, keep in mind that the 1520 Scenario is at the beta level, so any input on balancing is welcome!

Playing the game

EEP setup puts a yellow EEP icon shortcut on your desktop. If you want to play a EEP scenario, you must start your game from EEP shortcut.

EEP redistribution policy

EEP involves many people who contribute on a voluntary basis; some events are included, some are modified, some are rejected. EEP strives to be a full scenario, which involves many modifications to the startup, monarchs, leaders, countries alliances etc, some of which linked to certain events, present only in EEP.

By downloading EEP you agree not to redistribute EEP in any way but as a whole package. People are free to do what they want with events, leaders, monarchs etc once they installed EEP, however, please don't redistribute parts of EEP with your own scenario without obtaining a permission of the original author of the event, or the person who made the changes to the monarch and leader files. When you contact that person, please also PM me (Crook) about this, so I would know what is going on.
