When you start Nordic Radar for the first time, a brief instructions dialog will be shown. You can choose whether you want to see these notes on the next startup or not.
As a main view Nordic Radar then displays a table view with the available radar sites, a snapshot and notes on the last update time and the already downloaded images (Figure 1). If you click on one of the rows, the current images for the corresponding region will immediately start loading (Figure 2). A progress bar shows the approximate downloading progress. You can now start zooming and scrolling in the radar map as images are downloaded progressively.
When you press the back button in the top left, you will return to the table view of all radar sites (Figure 1). But now the status information for the previously selected region will have been updated with the most recent data.
If you press the location finder button in the top right, Nordic Radar will try to determine your current location. Note that location services need to be enabled for this feature to work. If already in the best matching map, a light blue focus view will appear and indicate the current location (Figure 3, center). Otherwise, Nordic Radar will pop the current radar site and open the one matching best for the current location.
When tapping on the radar map once, an overlay menu will appear (Figure 3). On the top, playback controls allow for stopping and starting the animation and moving to individual images. In the bottom, the current date for the image is displayed, as well information on the time since the last image became available for the current radar site. If supported by the device and if location services are enabled, a live compass indicates how the device is oriented relative to the map. If the arrow turns yellow the map and device are aligned. The direction from which rain is approaching can now be directly read from the screen.
Tap again on any clear location on the overlay menu to hide the menu return to normal zooming and scrolling.
Touch the info button in the bottom right of the overlay menu to display the app settings (Figure 4).
The number of images to be downloaded can be set to between 1 and 9 images. This settings can be made separately for fast internet connections on Wifi networks or slow and expensive cellular network connections. Typical values are between 3-5 images.
The playback speed of the images can be set by adjusting the pause between images in the range of
0-3 seconds. Typical settings are 0.5 to 1.0s. Pressing the "Done" button returns to the overlay menu. Another touch anywhere in the map also hides the overlay menu.
