MOTORPSYCHO:
I
first heard Motorpsycho when I went to see a movie (can't remember which one)
at the local cinema. Before the movie started. They played the just-released
Motorpsycho video of the song Starmelt/Lovelight of their then, just-released
album Angels and Deamons at Play. Didn't think much of it at the time. Too pop-ish
and not what you expect when your hear the name Motorpsycho. This was in 1997-98.
Since I didn't think much of the song, it took some time before I had my second
encounter with them, which was in the fall of 1998.
Motorpsycho had just released their second double album, Trust Us. And a few people at my school were constantly listening to it. I had this media class and we had to make a fictional movie, and one guy on my group came up with the idea to base the movie on a Motorpsycho song called, Vortex Surfer. We all loved the idea, and went with it. But it wasn't till we were in the editing room a few months later before I actually heard the song. It was incredible. So incredible infact, that it got voted as the millennium song that was to be played all new years eve, 1999, on the radio. The radio channel was no other than Norway's biggest music radio channel at the time, petre (aka. P3). During all this time, I still didn't listen to them. I was at this party at a hotell on new years eve 1999, and I turned on the TV, set it to a channel that airs P3 when they're finished with all their shows. And made everybody listen to the song for 2-3 hours in a row :). The same song over and over again. But even after this, I still didn't bother to check them out.
It wasn't untill
one year later, january 2001, that I got a hold of their latest album at the
time, Let them eat cake. I was disappointed with the album. Didn't sound anything
like I expected it to, except for the two singles off it I had heard, which
were great. Anyways, I wasn't about to give up yet. A friend of mine had an
older album, from 1995, called Blissard. I borrowed it, and was blown away.
How could a norwegian band make this good music? Let alone a band from Trondheim.
And now I was hooked, and have been ever since.
The Motorpsycho sound. Motorpsycho has touched every single part of the
genre rock there is. They have done everything imagineable, and now they're
making they're own rock genre almost. Some of their earlier stuff was almost
hard rock, and their latest is almost pop like. And the most amazing part is,
their fans always support them nomatter what they make. What they'll release
next is hard to tell, but I know one thing, I can't wait! Here's a link to one
of their songs from Timothy's Monster; Watersound.
Motorpsycho started
out as a trio. Including Bent Sæther on bass and vocals, Hans "Snah"
Magnus Ryan on guitar and vocals and Håkon Gebhardt on drums. Their first
release was a demo called Maiden Voyage from 1990. Their debut album was Lobotomizer,
released in 1991. Ever since then they've released something every year. The
last release was fall, 2001, with the album Phanerothyme.

As you can see Motorpsycho have been VERY productive. Of all their albums, my personal favorites are: Blissard, Timothy's Monster, Trust Us and Angels and Deamons at Play. The rest are very good too, but these I've mentioned now, are incredible. Their EP's: Each EP contains at least, 3 new songs, and mostly have 5-6 songs on them. Of their EP's I love Manmower, Starmelt and Barracuda. What I like most about Motorpsycho, is their ability to renew themselves with each release. Although I didn't like Let them eat cake when it came out, I think it's really good now. The reason for that, was their latest album, Phanerothyme. The two albums are very much alike, but also different at the same time :) I hope I've managed to inspire you to go out and check out Motorpsycho. They are in the humble opinion of this writer, geniuses.
