KJETIL A. LIE:

(Porsgrunn SK, Norway - born 18.11.80 - FIDE-ELO 2347)

Lie has still not been really close to any IM-norm, but now seeded 10 in Norway he is all the more often mentioned as the countrys best candidate for the title!

Starting his career as sometimes rather primitive attacking target man (at one occasion accused of playing "stoneage-chess" by a more civilized defeated opponent), the so far most famous of three chess playing brothers has improved markedly in all phases of the game the last two years, and succeeded to develop his creativity. Never a materialist he is usually willing to give up a pawn or three for the initiative, and very often the queen for two pieces. Less impressing as a rapid player Lie seldom gets extremly short of time, but generally looks unconfident with less than ten minutes left. His achilles heel on this level still is the openings : Lie knows enough to get himself into the sharp variations, but not always enough to get out of them again....
